Stop Motion Animation- 10am-4pm, Workshop
Instructor Grayden Laing
Ed Video Media Arts Centre
Stop motion animation is nearly as old as film itself. Today, it is
easier, cheaper, and more accessible than ever. This workshop will focus
on the technical aspects of producing your own stop motion animations
using basic equipment like webcams, digital still cameras, DV cameras, and
simple animation software. Participants will learn how to make and use
puppets, clay figures, or drawings to create frame by frame movement. The
basics of miniature set construction and lighting are also taught, as well
as post-production concerns like adding audio, mouth movement, and special
effects.
This workshop will be held in Ed Video's brand new Animation Studio! A
room on the third floor has been set up to allow members to shoot their
own animations. It contains a table for the miniature set, a workbench for
prop and puppet construction, an assortment of small lights, and a
Macintosh G4 with appropriate software for animation. The studio may be
booked for one month at a time. This will allow time to create the set and
characters, shoot sequences, and is a suitable place to leave everything
set up between shoots. Best of all, the Animation Studio is available at
no cost to members. So, pick up an application at Ed Video and get
clicking! The results are only limited by your level of dedication and
creativity.
Grayden has had an active interest in animation since working on a short
animated film while studying fine art at York University. Although Grayden
mainly works on stop motion animation, he has also studied and created 2D
classical animation and Flash animation. His formal artist training is as
a painter and sculptor, which helps in the creation of his characters and
sets. For more information about Grayden or to view his stop motion
characters and sets view his website at www.graydenlaing.com.

Screening TV DINNER: Let's Exploit the Televisual Fantasy!- 8pm
67 Norfolk Street (Above Curry in a Hurry).
This screening will exhibit a notch in Canadian video art's belt, as
artists rejected and poked fun at the corporate talking heads projected in
television space. The videos are uncanny and funny, capturing the overly
polished tone (voices, lighting, editing cuts) of television production,
while distorting its message. In the Ed Video archive can be found traces
of the parodical and satirical plays on the tube produced around this
time. Two of Anne Milne's video projects, an episode of Ed Video's
short-lived public access television show entitled Televideo for Cable 8,
1981, and a short called Newsmakers, 1981, show key aspects of this trend.
By contextualizing Anne Milne's videos with a video made for Canadian
television at NSCAD by David Lamelas entitled The Hand, 1976, and General
Idea's Test Tube, 1979, a discernible thread emerges: irony. "Hold on a
second, I think that might be Barbara Walters" you will say. By
appropriating the language of TV and creating caricature, these videos
divulge the secret corporate media tries to keep(shhhh): that television
is some kind of perverse distortion of reality.
