2. This weekend at Ed Video:
Screening: Man Versus Nature
November 21, 2008
8 pm, Ed Video Media Arts Centre
Guest curated by Jim Riley.
Man versus Nature is an established literary theme. Humans interact with Nature,
and this narrative has been going on for millennia. Human beings often attempt
to control their surroundings, although over the long run, it is unlikely that people
will be able to control the natural environment. The artists included in ‘Man Versus
Nature’ demonstrate their awareness of this conflict in their videos, and the chosen
work offers a variety of reactions and suggestions.

Studying the Master Filmmakers:
DON'T MISS THE LAST "STUDYING THE MASTERS" CLASS OF 2008!!!
STEVEN SODERBERGH - a master player who can move fluently between the Indie
Filmmaking scene and the Hollywood Blockbuster world. He took the world by storm
with his low budget "Sex, Lies and Videotape" in 1989 (which revolutionized indie
filmmaking at the time) and hasn't looked back. Soderbergh wears every hat in the
business from crew member, cinematographer, editor, writer, producer to director
(sounds like most of us at Ed Video!)
The specific focus of this class will be "The Good German" and how Soderbergh
strived to be authentic to the old studio system/Michael Curtiz-method of
filmmaking. (Michael Curtiz, master Hollywood director from the 1920's - 1960's, of
Casablanca fame).
Always pushing himself to try new things, Soderbergh often ends up polarizing his
fans. Come out and join a potentially heated debate over his work!
Presented by the winner of the 72 Hour Infected Film Challenge: Paul French.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28TH; 7:00P.M. AT ED VIDEO (40 BAKER STREET, 2ND FLOOR) $5 at the door.
Soderbergh's Selected Filmography (as Director):
Guerrilla (2008)

December 12: Code Red Green Blue
Standard definition video is a low-resolution, subjective rendering
of the truth. The viewer must extrapolate this truth by reading
between the pixels, using video as their witness to distinguish
fiction from reality. As the study of ‘conspiracy theories’ moves
from the fringe into the mainstream, it is the veracity of the video
signal that is often at the forefront of the debate. Video purports to
delineate the facts surrounding the pivotal events of our time.
Examining the video signal is foremost to those investigating the
actualities of the accept course of recent historical events. Each frame
is analyzed in an attempt to extract evidence, in order to reach the
desired conclusion. How much truth can be found in the 76,800 dots
of colour that create a web-sized video?

8. YouTube Picks of the Week.
Ok, it’s not a YouTube pick, but for those of you who are concerned about copyright issues…. get a load of this!
Mayor of Batman sues WB, Nolan
Batman has a new adversary: Batman. The mayor of an oil-producing
city in southeastern Turkey, which has the same name as the Caped
Crusader, is suing helmer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for
royalties from mega-grosser "The Dark Knight." Huseyin Kalkan, the
pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of Batman, has accused
"The Dark Knight" producers of using the city's name without
permission. "There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said.
"The American producers used the name of our city without
informing us."

Last year he serialized the story George Sprott (1894-1975) in the New York Times for 25 weeks and will appear in an expanded form as a book in the spring of 2009.
Seth and Ware’s conversation will be preceded by an audiovisual presentation prepared by Ware and This American Life radio host Ira Glass entitled Lost Buildings concerning the demolition of Chicago architect Louis Sullivan’s buildings and one person’s efforts to save them.
