Take Shelter
Destined for a place on most Best of, Top Ten and Nominees lists, Take Shelter features Michael Shannon as Curtis LaForce, a working-class man who works to shelter his family from the outward threat of oncoming storms. But his obsession with building an underground shelter in the back yard has grave effects on the finances and emotional stability of his family. Troubled by the disturbing images of his nightmares and daydreams, Curtis investigates the schizophrenia in his family's past. Take Shelter is a gripping allegory for the well-intentioned, but misguided fear and paranoia that fuel the current bunker mentality in the US of A.

Melancholia
Unpredictable weather disasters, economic collapse, Sun-spot storms, dire predictions for 2012 from the Mayans, and now we have the latest work from the ever-provocative, neurotic motor-mouth bad boy auteur of European cinema, Lars Von Trier. The film is presented in two parts, bearing the name of the two sister characters, Justine (Best Actress Winner at Cannes 2011, Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Newlywed Justine and her groom are exceedingly late for their own wedding reception, which unleashes the wrath of her parents in an astounding, yet rather comedic, display of very bad behaviour. This, in turn, prompts anti-social cartwheels from Justine who falls into an downward spiral of intense depression. With Claire's portion of the film, the newly discovered spot of light in the evening sky has been identified as a planet, named Melancholia, which may be on a collision course with Earth. Set amongst the extreme opulence of the family's luxurious estate, the sisters face the internal crisis of Justine's severe depression while awaiting Melancholia's orbital arc and the possible destruction of our planet. Wow! Melancholia is challenging, disturbing and visually stunning. And with a strong international cast including, John Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling, it is a must-see for the ardent cinephile.
