Summary (specs are below)
Simply put, the Canon XF300 is an amazing camera. It is relatively easy to use, reliable, and most importantly it captures a high-definition image with stunning clarity and beautiful colours.
This camera is highly recommended for anyone shooting for colour keys, professional level video, and documentaries. It is especially recommended for those shooting in a situation where the aesthetic of the camera matters almost as much as the quality of the image it captures.

Many renters might wonder how this camera compares to shooting video on a DSLR such as the Canon 60D. Aside from the obvious form factor and weight differences, there are a few other important considerations:
  • In most circumstances, the XF300 will record a noticeably better image than a DSLR, with the multiple sensors, colour information, bit rate, and compression being the key contributors to that.
  • A DSLR will likely perform better in low light situations.
  • Moire and rolling shutter will be less of an issue on the XF300 than on a DSLR.
  • The XF300 has an impressive lens, but the variety of lenses available for DSLRs will allow more control over the focal range and depth of field.
  • Recording professional-quality audio is much easier to do using the XF300, as you can input two microphones directly into the camera, adjust your levels while recording, and monitor the audio while recording. Doing this on a DSLR requires an external audio recorder or adapter.
  • The auto functions of the XF300 are unquestionably more reliable than those on a DSLR.
Is the XF300 the best camera in Ed Video's arsenal? No. Every user and every job are different, and there is a right camera for each job. It is a great camera for most jobs, and we strongly recommend it.
