Hard and Soft: Ed Video Artist in Residence
This internship opportunity is presented as part of the “Digital Skills for Youth” program coordinated by the Independent Media Arts Alliance and funded by the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
Ed Video Media Arts Centre presents the Hard and Soft: Ed Video Artist-in-Residence Program funded by IMAA’s Digital Skills for Youth Program. We are looking for an Artist-in-Residence to experiment with different technologies, creatively engage with the community and continue to develop their practice.
This artist residency will offer theoretical, practical and technical skills that will support the artist in residence in the preparation, execution and presentation of their work. This program provides a framework for an emerging media artist to participate in a paid artist residency, access mentorship, equipment, working spaces, and resources.

Equipment & Technologies
This program will support experimentation with different forms of media and technology.
Ed Video has various media-based technologies and equipment, including 3D printers, VR headsets, projectors, media players, video and audio mixers, and DMX lighting. Additionally, the organization has an iPad with AR/XR capabilities, as well as laptops and a desktop computer with neural core enabled GPUs, which can be used for high-level machine learning and other media-based applications.
In addition to the equipment and technology available, Ed Video staff possess diverse skill sets and experiences in the arts. Ed Video staff has previously supported artists working in areas such as live video, 3D modeling and printing, projection mapping, VR/AR, game development, lighting design, and video installation. Ed Video Staff will provide the majority of the training and mentorship for this artist residency. Elia Morrison, Technical Director and Stephanie Badoe, Digital Endeavours Intern will provide technical support, encouraging the artist to develop their digital skills. Maddie Lychek, Program Director will provide direction in the areas of artistic, theoretical and presentation for the artist to develop and sustain their artistic practice. Elizabeth Dent, Executive Director will impart knowledge related to arts administration, soft skills, project budgets and grant writing. The selection of our external mentor is dependent on the area of focus of the selected resident.
We have a studio space that is equipped for various modes of creation, including VR and AR, projection, screen-based work, audio, sculpture, and performance. This space provides artists with a dedicated environment in which to develop their ideas and to experiment with different forms of technology. The organization is committed to supporting the selected artist with access to the resources, technology, and skills necessary to explore their own area of interest and focus.
The successful candidate will be expected to commit to 28 hours a week for the duration of the six-week residency (February 17th - March 31st, 2023). This residency is self-directed and will provide mentorship, and technical support for the artist. The Artist-in-Residence will be expected to work at the centre a minimum of 1-2 days per week and work the remainder of their time at home. The selected artist is expected to provide process documentation, descriptions of work, continue their practice and/or develop a new work. The resident is asked to engage with the community through one public event (workshop, artist talk, panel discussion, etc.).
This position is offered through the Digital Skills for Youth (DS4Y) program funded by the Government of Canada which aims to help underemployed youth enhance and develop their digital and soft skills. The program combines valuable work experience with digital skills training, allowing participating youth to advance their digital skills and secure their success in the digital economy.
Eligibility - Interns hired under DS4Y must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada (either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status - work permits are not eligible);
- Self-identify as underemployed (i.e. employed below their level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs);
- Have completed post-secondary studies (exception: interns located in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion);
- Have no immediate family relationship with the employer.
Ed Video is situated on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron, Anishinaabek, and Haudenosaunee Peoples and the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Ed Video’s full-time home base presence is at 404 York Road in Guelph, ON. This position requires that you are available to work onsite.
