Ed Video Media Arts Centre is looking for a Program Director to lead artistic programming across digital and physical platforms, that promotes and engages with independent media art in Canada.  

The successful applicant will be expected to coordinate a minimum of six public programming events per year that reflect a diversity of media arts practices and artists across Canada. Working in collaboration with current staff, and community partners the Programming Director will seek out exciting and diverse media artworks for presentation as a cohesive programming season.  The Program Director’s expertise, experience and knowledge of contemporary Canadian media arts will assist Ed Video in presenting diverse and provocative examples of media arts practice that will generate dialogue and stimulate the practice of Canadian artists. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Exhibition Duties

  • Curating or supervising the curation of a minimum of six public programming events per year that reflect a diversity of media arts practices and artists across Canada.
  • Finding locations, partners and artists for exhibitions, locally, nationally and internationally
  • Supervising installation and take down of exhibitions
  • Assisting artists and curators with event preparation
  • Supervising the set-up of any tech for shows
  • Promoting Ed Video to artists
  • Documenting exhibitions for future promotion and to meet grant requirements 
  • Being the OAC Exhibition Assistance program recommender for Ed Video

 

Production Duties

  • Assisting with supervision of the Equipment Residency Program

 

Administrative Duties

  • Coordinating calls for submissions
  • Writing programming grants (with Executive Director, as necessary)
  • Managing programming budget
  • Determining volunteer needs for events 
  • Promotion of events through social media and traditional forms of promotion (press releases, posters, flyers, etc.) 
  • Coordinating with other artists run centres, galleries, and exhibit spaces, as well as liaising with other local arts organizations and artists
  • Preparing artist contracts, expense reports, and other administrative tasks of exhibitions
  • Submitting receipts for all expenses in a timely manner
  • Preparing reports to the Board
  • Preparing documentation materials of Ed Video shows – photo galleries, catalogues, etc 

 

Shared duties for all Ed Video Staff Members

  • Answering phone and taking messages
  • Maintaining office cleanliness 
  • Supervising co-op student (with Executive Director)
  • Assisting members with the sign out of equipment (with Technical Director)
  • Invoicing or receiving payments from members, virtually, in person and by phone, for equipment rentals or other services
  • Checking and responding to email regularly 
  • Promotion Ed Video through press releases, community interaction and social media

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

We are seeking someone with combined artistic, managerial and administrative experience, flair, inclination and aptitude. The ideal candidate has a strong background in contemporary media arts and would thrive in a work environment that combines flexibility, structure, self-direction and collaboration. 

The following qualifications would be helpful:

  • 2+ years of experience working in roles of responsibility and leadership in media arts or a related field, including substantial experience in creative, managerial and administrative areas:
  • Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion practices and policies
  • Background and interest in media arts, interdisciplinary, visual arts and/or curatorial practices
  • Success in writing arts grants and knowledge of arts funding 
  • Experience managing staff, artists, learners, and volunteers
  • Experience providing mentorship and guidance to emerging artists,
  • History and evidence of a compelling artistic and/or curatorial practice
  • Substantial education or learning background in a relevant field
  • Strong written and verbal skills in English, with other languages an asset
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to assume leadership and take initiative, as well as collaborate and support others.

Requirements:

  • Available for occasional evenings and weekend commitments

This internship opportunity is presented as part of the “Digital Skills for Youth” program coordinated by the Independent Media Arts Alliance and funded by the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

 

Announcing a unique opportunity to work at Ed Video Media Arts Centre. We are a membership-based production centre with a mission to foster the creation, exhibition and appreciation of media art. We are looking for a Digital Endeavours Intern to coordinate a set of 1.5 - 2 month collaborative learning sessions, where participants experiment with different types of technology, learning together and sharing ideas and knowledge.

Internship End Date: 31-03-2023

Hours worked per week: 30

Hourly wage: $19.00

The intern will: 

  • Develop technical skills in Ed Video’s equipment, technology and software related to those technologies in order to share these skills with our membership and exhibiting artists
  • Coordinate all Ed Video Digital Endeavours series activities with the guidance of our Education Coordinator and Technical Director. This would include determining the creative goals of each session, scheduling, promoting and administering group activities, moderating Discord discussions for the group and documenting activities;
  • Work with mentors/ instructors to develop course plans for each of the five sessions
  • Perform tasks including promotion, registration process, confirmation of session dates and mentors, specific session creative activities and post event evaluation.
  • Provide various administrative and shared office duties, including contributions to grant-writing, budgeting, promotion of events, and payment processing

 

This position includes evening and weekend work, some hours regularly in the office and some planning time. The successful applicant must complete and submit proof of the Vulnerable Sector Verification process. This verification can be completed through regional police services. Ed Video will reimburse the new employee for costs associated with the process.

The successful candidate is a media arts enthusiast and is well informed about contemporary art practices. They will be expected to stay up-to-date with advancements in digital technologies as they relate to the creation and exhibition of media arts, with a focus on equipment and technology available at Ed Video. A post-secondary arts education is considered an asset. A high level of digital fluency, and a strong desire to learn and experiment with technology are key requirements.

This position is offered through the Digital Skills for Youth (DS4Y) program funded by the Government of Canada which aims to help underemployed youth enhance and develop their digital and soft skills. The program combines valuable work experience with digital skills training, allowing participating youth to advance their digital skills and secure their success in the digital economy.

Mentorship and training will be offered to the successful applicant.

 

Eligibility - Interns hired under DS4Y must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship;
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status - work permits are not eligible);
  • Self-identify as underemployed (i.e. employed below their level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs);
  • Have completed post-secondary studies (exception: interns located in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion);
  • Have no immediate family relationship with the employer.
